Each group or formation has one ship denoted as a "Guide" . The "Guide" is a group's leader, and each of the other ships in the group will line up on the Guide.
On the CIC the "Guides" are indicated by two solid dots in a diamond icon. A Guide may be AI or player controlled.
The "Flagship" is the ship the player is on , and is denoted by a blue filled diamond . The Flagship may or may not be the Guide for a group.
During a mission the Guide(s) and Flag ship can be moved around by the player allowing some interesting tactical movement.
I think Tutorial 2: Groups Ops. is great practice. Here you can Practice forming and un-forming groups and better understand how to change the Guide for each group. Practice moving your flagship around. Change formation type, speeds, spacing etc. All of this can be done on the Mouse RIght click menu.
The CIC and group OPS can be a bit twitchy at times , patience is needed, but overall IMHO works very well. -Vox
