The effect can be subtle: make main texture's RGB channel solid gray to see what a difference the specular mask makes. Contrast/luminosity/gamma of the alpha channel might require to be tweaked separately for each material, and material's "Specular strength" attribute raised a bit for the effect to become more obvious
