420,000 soldiers from both sides were killed, wounded, or went missing during the Battle of Normandy. But the invasion succeeded. It always looks better on paper...

While watching documentaries of D-Day I was surprised to learn that the Germans found a dead Allied Officer with a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist. Inside was the entire battle plan for the D-Day invasion.

Unknown to the Allies then, the Germans knew the entire D-Day (and after) battle order, including the bridges the paratroopers were to take and hold in preparation for the main invasion force moving inland.
