Well, I ended up moving forward and launching a campaign, hoping to learn along the way. I did manage to get through the escorts several times and scored hits on the ships in convoy, though annoyingly they wouldn't sink.
I didn't stay in the mission long enough to notice they run in circles, I thought they were just alternating between WSW and SSW course. Still, I think I got better at the scope but I definitely lack the "nicety of timing"...
