I saw it while I was in japan, and my understanding of japanese is rather limited so I wasn't able to understand much of the dialog. I am trying to find an english copy of this movie right now, but a few notes from what I could gather about it from watching it in Japanese:
The actor who plays the captain does a remarkable job, something that I could tell without understanding what he was saying. The captains character also seems to be quite well fleshed out.
The film at times seems to take a pro-war stance, something unusual for the Japanese in this day and age.
The film also addresses issues with the kaiten - manned torpedos. This was and is a very controversial subject, and provides a really interesting dynamic (I think) to the film.
Be careful about looking for reviews for this movie, most of the ones I found were laden with spoilers.
