U47 - Lt.z.S. Willi Hartmann - Sept. 1939 162240 - Hebrides Channel, Northern entrance

Not much rest, we were sent out again on Sept. 10th., patrol area AM23. Aimed to go between the Orkneys and the Shetlands to reach the Atlantic. There was a great temptation to try for Scapa flow again but our orders are explicit - stay away from enemy naval vessels if possible.

The strait between Shetland and the Orkneys proved to be very target-rich. Within a day six small and medium British merchants were encountered, unarmed and unlighted and not stopping for warning shots. All but one were sunk by the deck gun, ammunition is well used up. We are now heading down the Hebrides Channel. Maybe a tiny bit look into Loch Ewe. We have, after all, credited ourselves with some merchants.......

The crew is shaping up. Has got a couple of new very sharp sonar operators. Missed that on the first patrol.
