Play SH3, SH4 or SH5 then.
They have tutorials built in and you can save / reload to your hearts content.
All the skills learnt there can be directly translated to here.
In fact even the video tutorials on youtube are just as relevant.
You don't have to practice in this game, if it 'takes too long' to get good at it.
Plus, a friend and I found a convoy of 40 ships inc two escorts. Plenty of 'target practice' there.
