Concerning 1.) I have checked it again and it works fine now

The only explanation I can think of is that the last time I loaded the game several times with different mod configurations. Maybe this led to the 'bug'. Sorry for the false alarm.

Concerning 2.) I have just tested it in Win 7 and did not see the squares anymore

Weired.
