Default Best of Subsim idea

@ MODS / Neal for consideration

@ Everyone else for discussion

(this idea may be impossible so im just throwing it out there)

We have been doing this "Best of Subsim" award stuff for a couple of years now.

<<<<< you know, this thing?

I had the idea i thought i would mention.

We as general members currently have the ability to rate threads with stars or even add tags to topics we create and mods have the ability to make threads "sticky" or make them go away to the land of the lost etc

why not have a button that says "Best of Subsim Candidate" in an out of the way place near the reply button or somewhere? perhaps with a 4 or 5 word blank which can be filled in providing the responder with a reason as to why they nominated it (funny, most helpful, great first post etc)

this way, when someone reads a thread and it seems "best of subsim" worthy, the reader can click "Best of Subsim Candidate"... (the thread starter cannot click his own button.)

Once clicked, 1) the thread is cached in an invisible location 2) the thread is ranked and 3) the person who clicked the "Best Of" button is permanently locked out from repeated clicks for the same thread.

therefore the thread that receives the most button hits will be ranked first, and the thread that receives the least amount of button hits (1) would be ranked last.

Why do this?

when the "committee" meets toward the end of the year to declare the winners of the "best of Subsim categories" they will have an excellent place to go and sort through the threads that the general membership thought was best.

this will substantially reduce the amount of time in deliberation, as the committee can decide that they will only be reviewing threads that received X or more recommendations, and they will also have a predetermined place to go looking for the best of the best as opposed to having to rely on suggestions of others and perhaps their own foggy memories to get the job done.

thoughts?
