Sunday, 3 August 1941 - Rosengarten

0326 - "ALARM!" Two 2-mot. bombers approaching from 180° true, are already verily close, about 3500m. Increasing speed to Flank. 6-8 bombs falling short of the boat. After the fly over, the airplanes approach again from the North. Changing course and heading straight for the airplanes on course NNW, as the Flak cannot be manned due to the heavy sea. A third 2-mot. bomber appears also from 180° true and drops 4 bombs that also fall short about 50-100m to our stbd. beam. Diving as the third bomber is about 4500m off. At T=70, no further bombs. No damages.

0330 - Boat staying submerged. Running off on general course. 135rpm, 3kn.

0350 - 100rpm, 2kn, silent running.

0450 - Sunrise.

0552 - O₂=20%.

0600 - Breakfast and Morning Wash.

0700 - Torpedo Maintenance at T=50.

0942 - O₂=19%.

One of our Fw200 was shot down by a Hurricane from a Catapult Ship of convoy SL-81. Request search and rescue of crew.

1919 - Reached exit point of Rosengarten.

The boat is being attacked by a single 2-mot. bomber approaching from the south. The bombs fall wide to stbd. Strafing fire from the airplanes guns hit the water to port, as the bomber flies off on heading SSE.

Cmdr.: "We were extremely fortunate, that we did not sustain any damages or casualties during the last two air attacks. I'm also very concerned, that even though I have assigned one additional crew member to each bridge watch, that the airplanes are being spotted very late. The reasons for this still need to be investigated and verified but until then, I will have to change tactics and will stay surfaced only when the air visibility is very good or for technical reasons."
