actually, i know of a better naval dash.

sometime in the 1980's the USS Coral Sea and the USS Enterprise were assigned to the same fleet exercise.
on their way out there the two CO's conspired to a wager as to who could outrun whom.
the Enterprise spotted the Maru (that was Coral Sea's nickname) a head start and she took off at flank speed, reaching approximately 33 knots. This is probably the only time that the Ol' Girl actually shook while underway.

Radio messages were exchanged between the two ships and The E started in pursuit.

Needless to say The E sailed right on past the Maru....right on out of sight.
No one will confirm her speed but the engineers on board the Maru figured she was sailing in excess of 50 kts.
