The graphic engine could be modified mostly as far as textures are concerned. Not much demand for that over the years as the current models and rather "rudimentary" textures seem to have been adequate. Yes one cannot make more serious changes except that in addition to little 3D model modifications if one has an access to 3dsMax 3.1.
