Nuclear Iran or not, other countries in the region are going to start building nukes anyways in the near future. The Saudis will probably do it first, and if it's something they're set on I can't see the west stopping them under current circumstances. Even the Saudis can't seem to rely on their traditional American protectors any more as a benign super power shielding them.
They seem to be a much more cost effective method of ensuring the conventional US forces don't roll over your dictatorship and its billions upon billions of dollars worth of USELESS (because of the relatively small numbers they are operated in and lack of truly capable operators) American/Russian/Euro sold arsenals (deals with the devil for oil offsets, helping US GDP, and the foolish "balancing act" game between Israelis and Arabs).
Hell, after we initially sanction you we'll even pay you off and take you off the state sponsors of terrorism list if you make it look like your nuclear program isn't rolling full speed ahead.
