I ended up (in the mod) just checking each day to see if a new MP3 was supposed to be played or not while alt-tabbed. I also found great joy by, when I came back to port, look up newspapers from the real world online, that the crew would have read when they were in port. News items presented in writing would be an immersive and interesting addition.
