BTW welcome aboard Kimmy!
NASA in the days of Mercury, had to decide on what they were looking for in an astronauts. Many people with years of experience in flying had come forward, both military and civil backgrounds, who wanted a chance to fly in space. It was decided that they had to be test pilots with university qualifications. This eleminated women pilots (as there were none who met the standards set) as well as many of the pilots who had more experience in edge of space flying (Chuck Yeager was another who was left out in the cold, despite having flown to the edge of space!)
When the U.S.S.R. put a woman in space, all was not what it seemed, she wasn't trained, the flight was totaly controled on the ground, she freaked out half way through the mission causing it to be cut short. Some cosmonauts open complainded that puting women in space demeaned them!
