I experience much the same in the early war. It does get heavier later on and you start to detect more when you have the radar to do so. They are out there and will find you sooner or later.
Also, if you are lucky and in port at the right time, air raids will start. No kidding. One player posted he was in port ready to set sail and mass of Japanese aircraft raided his port. Tell me that was not a cool experience
