The real guys just looked at the target and estimated AOB - and i think it's just not that hard to do in the game after a bit of practice

however with the earlier monocular periscope German kaleuns also used the aspect ratio in conjunction with the split-prism stadimeter to calculate AOB, a method simulated in the U-jagd tools mod

plotting was not so easy without a good aob estimate because getting accurate range estimates at long ranges was not so easy - you didn't know the exact mast-height of the target so plots may have taken a long time, and you didn't have automatic map contact updates either. But knowing aob can help with the long-range plot a lot, and again the aob is best guestimated by looking at it
