It is not the novel itself, but basing on the novel. However, as the satire and biting criticism of American TV series cliches ("the young, the candy-sweet and the wonder-beautiful"), love for weapons and violence, and militarism, that Verhoeven turned the story into, I thought it was brilliant, simply that. No wonder that he made himself many enemies with it!

Just look at the in-film TV-recruiting-spots and adverts for the military - it's all so revealing and so damn true!
