Once, in the Med, I came across a small 5 vessel convoy which I then proceeded to attack. I picked out the largest & best target, a large merchant flying a New Zealand flag (sorry Lucy Lawless
). I hit her and just as she was sinking 3 Ju 87's & 3 Ju 88's appeared and proceeded to pound the surviving ships. One of the Ju 88's scored a near miss on one of the L-class AA destroyers which set her on fire. The other AA destroyer shot down one of the Ju 87's. I would have attacked the crippled destroyer but by this time all the enemy ships were on high alert and were moving too fast for me to get in to a good firing position. The other escort was also getting dangerously close to me so I decided to make my escape.
I don't see the Luftwaffe very often but I sometimes see convoys with damaged ships. Unfortunately they always seem to be on the other side of the convoy & always seem to be far too close to an escort to safely attack.
