You know I've had SC since it was released and I've never ticked the transparent water box in the settings menu. What does it do exactly (obviously makes the water transparent, but I thought it was fairly transparent anyway) and does it add to the realism in any way?

Well it's a matter of personal subjective preference but I've seen pictures of SSN at periscope depth in clear ocean being clearly visible.
