The map editor is VERY simple, but sadly, you can only make multiplayer maps with it.
Anyways, dont know if you've ever played the simcity games, the map editor is almost identical to Sim City's terrain editor. Just select the tool/texture and paint.
EDIT: Ow yeh, and it's not the "full" editor the devs used. It's very simplificied version, there's no triggers, particles or anything you can do with it. Just the basic stuff like mountains, ground textures, roads and trees.
As for losing everything, wouldnt know, I'm only 50% thru the first play through. :p But if that's the case, it would suck, badly. You do missions for the arms dealer to unlock new items, the missions are piece of cake, but it's the distances that make them boring and time consuming.
