I have a special interest in WWII subs, as my father (a merchant sailor) was torpedoed twice by Japanese submarines during the war. Both times the submarine surfaced after the attack and gave the crew food, medicine and warm clothes while they were in the lifeboats. Honorable people, the Japanese.
