When should this mod be installed: while in port during a career, only at the beginning of a new career, etc.?

I'm asking because I installed ver. 3.1 while at sea in an ongoing career, and the result was a totally black sky. I uninstalled it and the graphics were back to normal. BTW, I should mention that I had exactly the same experience with the 16 km distance mod.
