Speaking as an ex-psychologist: don't take all this too serious.
To lend from Heisenberg: what researchers examined was not so much the "natural" music listener "as is", but people that were exposed to the researcher's methodology to raise his datapool. And that, in social sciences, often is the problematic variable.
