Unfortunately it's the trend these days. First Bioshock, Mass Effect, and now we get this ****ery. The good thing is that like every other trend, it will end one day. But a lot of things will have turned for the worse until that.
I think what happened is that the businesspeople (not the software people!) have realized that in order to further maximize their profits, they absolutely have to stop people using illegit copies. And if the last two decades have taught us something, the only way to stop it is to add copy protection that leaves absolutely no way around. So much for theory.
So the clerks made sure the software people have to add copy protection, though they probably told them it would never work. Did your boss ever come up with some really stupid idea, and when you told him it's stupid he made it clear he still wants you to do it? In the end you just say wtf. And so they come up with all kind of **** to please the suits, and we can all see it's not working: They are about to merrily **** up the reputation of the gaming industry and the pc as a gaming platform.
You know what, I am beginning to not care anymore either.

When it come to the big releases I don't buy many new games, though I get quite a few releases from independent companies. I also discovered that a lot of fun can be had with older games which I missed when they were new. I recently had lots of fun with Arcanum, Fallout, Baldurs Gate II, Battle of Britain 2, Hidden and Dangerous 2, to name only a few. They can be bought legally for virtually nothing, and offer a lot more fun than all this "nexgen" crap we get to see since the console age began.
I'm so sick and tired that I'd actually like to see forums devoted to small and independent games only. So I could turn my back on mainstream publishing for good, like I did some years ago to Hollywood cinema.
Needless to say I got neither Bioshock nor Mass Effect nor does this Spore interest me anymore.
