To be honest, the fault here lies with Palin's people. This is TV Production 101.
All they did was use an old gramatical trick of making the interviewer more visually imposing than the interviewee.
The first thing the Palin folks should always do in any interview situation is check the shot. That means check that her eyes will be at the same level as the interviewer, and that the camera shooting her is a reasonable distance from her and is using a tight lens rather than a less flattering wide angle lens.
