Chinese infant formula sold illegally in ethnic markets in the United States may be tainted with the chemical melamine, the Food and Drug Administration warned. Melamine is the industrial chemical that was linked to tainted pet food in the United States last year. “We want to get a message out to the Chinese community” after reports of illness among babies in China from contaminated formula, said Janice Oliver, deputy director for operations for the agency’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Formula sold legally in the United States poses “no threat of contamination,” she said.
