To answer bluebeards question:

Galveston is about 45 miles from Houston proper, but with urban sprawl it's probably a lot closer by now.

Saw rattlesnakes hanging on barbed wire fences after Hurricane Carla back in 1961 ... yep I was in that one when I was 17.
