You keep moving. Even at 2 knots but you're moving. You try to present the smallest profile to the DDs (not only the pinging one(s)). That means that you're not only moving but turning too. I turn towards or away from the DDs (trying to bring them at bearing 0 or 180) even if they're on passive (you never know when theyll go on active sonar). It's these turns superimposed on my general escape direction that make up my "avoid tactics". Mind you that having some speed doesn't mean that your motors are running continuesly. You can go at 1/3 get your speed at 3 knots, stop the engines put them back on when speed drops at 1 knot.And of course the deeper the better (ehm ... please don't misinterpretate that last phrase eh! )
