just be readdy to keep hitting it, it goes to real time anytime an aircraft or ship comes within sensor/radar range or shallow water or near land so due to very large amount of traffic you encounter the tc is a pain sometimes.
as SteamWake said, you should get the 1.5 patch to make the game work so much better, it costs $10 and is a download only version. the only other way to get it is the new "gold edition" of sh4 that gives you sh4 and 1.5 ad-on on disc for $30. trust me you want to get 1.5.
