Well, it's like this (in the USA at least):
1) Buy Silent Hunter 4 for around $20. You get a box, a CD with the game on it, and a manual that is wrong a lot of the time. You'll likely get v1.3 of the game. You'll have to download and install the v1.4 patch for the game to be playable.
Buy the U-Boat Missions add-on for $10. You get nothing but a digital download - a file. No hard copy. You can't buy a physical copy of just the add-on anywhere in the USA. This will patch your game up to v1.5.
or
2) Buy Silent Hunter 4 Gold Edition for around $30. You get a box, a DVD with the game and U-Boat Missions all in one place. Maybe an updated manual is in there too? No patches needed (yet). If you put the game away on a shelf 10 years and want to play it again, you can use this one disc to install the game again. No need to worry about finding your "digital download" of the add-on or patches.
