This made me wonder what kind of "hotwater" those who sunk American subs with friendly fire found themselves in.
Seems like coverup was the general order of the day....but then it was wartime...so...
One especially grevious incident involved a boat spotted traveling in an established "safe lane." The plane attacked and missed but called in destroyer support which managed to sink the sub with all hands...even as they were sending out morse code friendly recognition signals by sonar. The sonar operator aboard the destroyer claimed in defense "
I thought it was a Jap Trick...I though they were trying to interfer with my sonar reception.
But you are probably right...writing off a carrier might be a slightly more difficult prospect.
