The best program of this kind I have found comes with the BoB Development Group's supermod for Battle of Britain Wings of Victory.
With one click...(no setup required)...it shuts down every nonessential service....uses very litle memory itself...and automatically restores the services next time you boot up. You run it before you boot up whatever game you intend to play.
The downsides are you have to keep BOB installed on your HD whether or not you play it and
it only works with XP not Vista...so I had to leave it behind.
