I think GWX have been done to improve realism and immerson of SHIII. And what do you think how hard a Kaleun´s life have been in WWII...In my opinion you have two possibilities:

1.) Learning and getting better
2.) Play Vanilla SHIII patched to 1.4

And btw in the first 1,5 years of the war (with gwx 2.1) it´s easy to attack the allied shipping and avoid antisubmarine ships...and slipping away when you´ve been hunted is more then only possible too.

Just my two cents
