This question doesn't really belong in the mods section. But I'll help you out anyway.
Placing the tick mark in the recognition manual means the notepad calculator gets to know the right mastheight for distance calculations. And since the speed calculation that is dependant on this distance, it is important that this is the right value. I know of no other way of entering mastheight other than the notepad (for unmodded/stock SH3).
If you want to enter your own 'guesses' of distance and/or AOB and speed then you can enter them manually on the attack screen dials if you switch that TDC knob to manual while doing it (and back when done).
