Yes you are right indeed about saving too close to AI or land. I learned that the hard way, having a great time inside a convoy...then I saved the game in there. Loading it again caused a CTD. Now I make sure I'm in the middle of nowhere before I save, no problems.
Also once I added a mod while at sea, CTD when loading the saved game. So don't do that
