Alberich was a codename for the secret rubber compound they applied to the boat. It was made from oppanol, which is still used today for the same purpose, as insulation. I believe they also made the compound better for application on modern subs, at least the Russians did. It was applied as 4mm thick strips, with glue. The glue was reported as not being very seaworthy, and the strips tended to peel off. If the could have fixed the glue issue, and came up with this idea earlier in the war, who knows, they might have held the Atlantic for longer than they did.

Thanks to everyone for their comments so far. I'll try to work on an IX Alberich boat, but I have to finish my U-869 skin first.
