According to some articles, the catch is that EA has implemented an ads system and "micro transaction"
Obviously, ads system could be ingame, or for the serve browsers, but micro transaction is what is used in some other games in which people pay real money to get access to weaponry or equipment unavailable for players not paying for them.
So if during the gameplay while armed with your STG 44 or your Lee Enfield you are suddenly shot by a dozen of mini-nuclear warhead automatically homing on you, you will understand it is the result of one of your opponent having bought something through EA "micro transaction"
Can't imagine what a multiplayer game of Sub Command would have been with "micro transaction" , while scanning your broadband sonar to find contact to transmit to your TMA crew, your sub is suddenly cut in half by a huge laser coming from an orbital space ship recently bought by a player through micro transaction
