To get my own bearing and position on the map i plot a course which is about the current bearing of my boat and after aligning i cut the engines and start doing the measurements. If im not in a hurry i try to calculate the relative course to me just by checking the profile of the target and plot an approximate course parallel to the target.

After the boat turned into my plotted course i start using the WA to get the pretty exact targetpostions from time to time until i get enough marks on the map to plot its course described in the tutorial. It's pretty tough in brought daylight to stay right out of the targets visible range but still close enough to get infos from the WA so i rather increase the distance again after each distance/bearing msg so i still can see the target but the WA and the watch on the target cant and after a while i move in again for another measurement.

Finally i put myself no more the 1000m away (i prefer 600-700) from the projected targetcourse in an 90 degree angle with scope down. Then i set the tdc to the calculated targetspeed, set distance to 1000m and the AOB between 35 and 45 depending on the target. As soon as the target bow pass right in front of me i raise the scope, lock on and fire torp(s), and lower it again. Sometimes i dont even raise the scope for locking, i just make sure the scope bearing in the tdc is accurate but that requires a lot of practice relying on the attackmap only to get a fix of the passing target in time.

Above procedure works without visible contact just with the help of the sonarguy as well though the chance is lower to get an acurrate course of the target so i end up sometimes to far or to close to the target. If i cannot adjust it by maneuvring in a better possition i have to use the OL2 special to to take the shot asap before it is spotting my scope and start zigzagging with variating speed.

If there are warships equipped with radar dont even think about to stay surfaced figuring his course out. Do it all by hydro and periscope at long distance with full stop or silent running. Let the target or convoy move out of detection range, and run surfaced to the calculated attackposition (if possible calculate it so the convoy runs above u at night time).
