It depends on your style of play. If you like playing at 1X real time, be prepared for LONG distances of open ocean.
I am on a third patrol (campaign) and had just one encounter, in a fog of course.
I have yet to see any aircraft, but the crew have sighted a few.
Watch out for shallow water around islands.
