There's always been violence in UK and elsewhere, now the media is just more far reaching through things like the Internet and therefore people all over the world know about individual knifings etc. in UK.

I understand why you're upset about the army chap being arrested but those 'citizens arrest' - type situations can be quite tricky from the point of view of the law book. The smart thing for him to do in that situation would have been to just to call the cops and consult them first. Not saying I accept any type criminal behaviour by hoodlums wielding knives etc.
You should also be proud of your country, your overall level of violent crime is in the end quite low. When I visited London I never had feelings of being threatened by potential violence.
