Venice's lagoon water is traditionally stagnant; it gets pungent in warm weather, & mosquitoes love it. The late Katherine Hepburn fell in a canal for a scene in "Summertime" (1955), forgot to close her eyes, & got an infection.
Apart from that, Venice is wonderful. I took my girlfriend to Carnevale last year and finally went for a gondola ride in 18th C. period costume! I looked kinda like Dennis Moore from the Monty Python sketch:
"Stand and deliver! Hand over all your lupins!"
