The 27 million would be a little more impressive to me if they made statistical comparisons and corrected for global population. There's more of everybody, of course there will be more people in slavery. 10 million in 500 million total people estimated in 1650 is a little more of a impact, than 27 million in 6.8 billion. Not to belittle their plight by any means, but the only solution would be creating an educated society with the infrastructure to support these people. That isn't going to come quickly, cheaply, easily, and in fact, it will probably get worse long before it gets better if oil replacement, even on a positive outlook, isn't found soon.
