I disagree.. the cover of night is essential, but if you are willing to spend an hour glued to your controls, then bad weather is more of a hinderance than a help.

Simply nose in at 1 knot to the narrows, sit at periscope depth with your periscope up, but below the water line - then move in during twilight hours to get a reasonable fix on where the netting is, mark it on your map then withdraw and wait for darkness.

When darkness falls, set your depth as 8m and silent speed and simply glide across the netting. So long as you are in the middle of the narrows, you'll get through

I've down it twice and neither time been caught. (In fact, it is a favourite tactic of mine in the early war years, to sneak into closed harbours, blow stuff up then pick off the enemy as he wades through the carnage or narrow entrances, before high-tailing it outta there) The only down side is you must watch your hydrophones for nearby shipping you may hit at such depths
