She won't be the first. In the 1950s there was Maria Theresa de Filipis and the '70s saw Lella Lombardi, both from Italy. There have been others more recently, but the greatest female driver to compete in Grands Prix did so before Formula 1 was created. Eliška Junková, known in the west as Elisabeth Junek, was a highly successful driver in the 1920s, quitting racing after her husband was killed in a GP accident.
