While it's still evidence of bad stuff, he might've been trying to help you out if the forms you were filling out were for licensing or something...
I wouldn't have checked the box 'white' if I weren't...though that's complicated for me as there is no box for Heinz 57
...but a lot of people would, and you were his customer...
