I see alot of ships in harbors where I get sent to do photo recon missions. I don't care much for attacking shipping in shallow waters though. The DD's can get you too easily in those areas. They are much faster than you on the surface, or submerged, and your batteries won't last long trying to out run their depth charges. Attacking harbors with a bunch of DD's around is a suicide mission. Even if there are big fat battlewagons in there or juicy freighters.

I like to get 'em on the approaches to the harbors. I keep just outside of the shallows by about 20 nm, and just cruise back and forth between the areas where they have to come from, and pick them off entering the area, or on their outward leg. Really ticks the escorts off too. They will hunt you down and ruin your day if they find you. The air around these ports in the daytime will be quite hazzardous to your health too as search planes will be watching for you too. You need to run real deep during the day, and surface only after complete darkness, submerging before first light to be real successful at these tactics.

Give that a try. The approaches to Manila after the fall of the Philippines is a good one for this, and Linguyen Gulf before the fall of Bataan, and the Northern port of Appari in the Luzon Strait is also ggod for this. It keeps you in deep water to perfect your own style, and technique.
