When dealing with large planes/bombers the crew would have to rely on sight a lot more than they could their ears. The lower frequency sounds bombers made would drown out into the background noise of the sea, especially in bad/poor weather. Fast single engine planes have such a higher pitch that they're like sirens so could at least be heard easier albeit harder to spot (and with the doppler shift if they could hear but not see its time to crash dive as it'd be pretty close to em). In 39' early 40 there's usually a flat top inside Scapa, found that if you go in and sink it that it noticeably reduces the number of annoying little planes buzzing around.
