I "heard" about the song when I was reading
Another Place, Another Time: A U-Boat Officer's Wartime Album by Werner Hirschmann. It seems that every time they played this song while they were docked at La Spezia, all the other crews would request that they crank up the gramaphone speaker so everyone could enjoy it.
