What's funny is that the Americans discovered how marginal the increase in performance from 16 to 18 inch was in tests of their own experimental 18 inch guns. You really just get into law of negative returns territory post 16 inch. The marginal performance increase didn't justify the cost, storage capacity, relibility, and production difficulties of the 18 inch rounds.

But man, haven't you heard? Yamato was fitted with a fire control system during Sibuyan. It could have killed the US navy thar! Except for the part where it would have run face first into 6 of the Navy's best battleships all with far better FCS that not only allowed them to range over the horizon, but jink back and forth thus making them virtually impossibly targets for Yamato to hit. Boo hoo.
